Final Exam

Ryan Jacoby
English 111
12/14/10
Everything I Have Learned This Semester
I believe I have earned a low A to high B this year in class based on what I have learned and the work and effort I have put forth. I have learned a lot of new things over the course of this semester and I have work and notes to prove that I have learned a lot and that I am deserving of a low A to high B. I have done most of the assignments done for this class and I am doing my final portfolio right now. I have completed all my main papers on time too. I haven’t turned anything in late and always get them done. I may do it at the last minute some times but I get the job done. The main points I will focus on are rhetorical knowledge, organization, and technology.

The first thing I will talk about is rhetorical knowledge, this was the main focus of the class this year. Before starting the semester I had never even heard of  rhetoric. Now I know that rhetoric is the study of how to accomplish your ends by using communications. I have also learned that rhetoric is based from the rhetorical triangle which is ethos, pathos, and logo’s.(http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/12/image-1.html ) Ethos is how we use a character and reputation. Logos is ideas and logic. Pathos is the study of how we use emotions. All three in triangle can also be written as audience, message, and author. You’re the author and have: agendas, goals, purposes, knowledge of what your writing about, and the conventions. You use these to create a message or craft which will be for a specific audience. The audience you will write for has specific expectations, and want to know how you will craft your message, the knowledge you have on the subject and what genre you will use.(http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/12/image-1.html) In every paper I have written this year I have been the author I have to write a paper about a certain subject for the teacher, who equals the audience. My midterm paper would be an example. I had to write a midterm paper similar to this one about what I learned so far through the mid-way point.(http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/10/revised-what-i-learned.html ) In this paper showed my knowledge of what I had learned through notes and blog posts that I had written prior. In the paper above I even used rhetoric to show that I deserved an A in the class. What I did was said that I deserved an A. Created a message to back up why I deserved an A. In my message I told the audience, which is Dr. Brandon, what I deserved and then wrote a paragraph containing all the information I learned. I knew he had expectations for what I was writing because in the opening statement I wrote that I deserved an A so I showed him everything I learned to demonstrate that I fulfilled the audiences expectations. The paper I am writing now is basically the last paper but adding more and using more sources to show what I have learned. Another fact I have learned about rhetoric is the communication can really effect how and author can get his message across to the audience.(http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/12/image-number-2.html ) Good communication is a form of communication that the author needs so the audience can understand him and his points clearly. What can affect communication though is noise. Noise can effect the senders message to the audience. Noise is everything that gets in the way of the author accomplishing their goal. To me noise it just more then literally the noise. It is also those distractions that distract you away from getting your work done. Now that I have learned about noise I try to avoid those distractions but its hard to just to get rid of them all. Oral communication is also a main focus of this class year. Oral communication falls into the category of communication in rhetorician. We have had a lot of group work to show oral communication skills. I was also the leader of my group for the history note card thing and I notified everyone the note cards were due Saturday to make sure no one forgot. I even had to post two of my group members note cards to my wall so that we could have all of our note cards online. (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2010-10-28T08%3A58%3A00-07%3A00&max-results=7). On this page you can see that I posted Marissa note cards because her blog wasn’t working so she sent me an email and I copied her note cards onto it. I did the same with Bil’s but he sent me the information through face book so I don’t know how I can show you he sent me it. Also I have revised and classmates paper, and vice versa. I took the information he wrote down and used it to improve on my paper. I have done the class assignments with the groups when we read out of the primary source books and talk about what we are going to write about. We also had to do a group activity where we looked into each other eyes. We learned how to long it takes to look into someone’s eyes before it got weird, how to master eye contact. First we had a partner and stood close and just stared into each other’s eyes and it was really awkward. Then we stood in a different stance and a little bit further away and it wasn’t as bad but got awkward after a little bit longer. Then we walked down a line and made eye contact with everyone in the line. This taught us to try to open up with others and to invite them into conversation. It definitely takes practice because when I try it I feel awkward. Hey, but at least I’m giving an effort. I tried it on my brother and he just said I was creeping him out I guess there’s an area I still have to improve more on.

This year I have also learned to be more organized and things that make me more organized are the writing process and the Cornell notes taking method. The writing process has been one of our main focuses this year. I have learned some tricks before I start writing that I never even thought about before this year. For instance I think about my audience, what my purpose and agenda is what genre I will be writing in, also format, tone, formality, and content. Some tricks and techniques I have learned are brainstorming, what I already know, research, listening, questioning, and talking with someone else. Some of my works that prove that I have learned how to use these tricks would be the brainstorming I have done on my blog, or the free writing that I did in class. One example would be prewriting I used prewriting to write a paper on the good life for Demayo. (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/09/pre-writing.html) (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/12/image-9.html ) We did this prewriting in class but then I posted it to my blog. What I did was brainstormed ideas of what I could use to write about the topic and wrote them down. Everyone in the group would say an idea and I kept the ones I thought were best. Then I looked up sources I could use to write about the topic and wrote them on there too. I used some of these skills to start the last paper and now this paper. I also learned the different steps of the writing process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, proof reading, publishing, and review. For a few papers I have gone through that process. (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/10/draft-for-course-outcome.html). That is the draft for my midterm for English. I got my basic ideas down on the paper but it wasn’t quite finished. I just included my main points and general ideas. Next I revised the paper and I posted the final copy.  (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/10/draft-2-course-outcomes.html) This is my final copy with all the specifics added to the general ideas. I even added some evidence to prove everything I wrote and used the P.E.A method to explain everything. I would use my main points as the P then would use evidence as my notes and blog posts and A was the explanation of my evidence and how I actually used that evidence to learn. I never really thought about using these steps before this year. I would always wing my papers and just turn them in without any revision or pre-writing before hand. The P.E.A method is a very strong method that I learned about and is one of my favorite new methods. (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/12/image-9.html) This method makes my papers have more of a backbone. I can really support what I am saying and helps me out a lot. I am using this method while I write this paper now because it gives me a better chance to prove what I have learned to my audience and backs everything up by giving evidence and analyzing it. Another style of prewriting I used was free writing.(http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/12/image-11.html) (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/12/image-12.html). I don’t like free writing as much as brainstorming. In free writing you write until the time is over. You write whatever is on your mind. You try to focus on your topic but if you can’t you write what is on your mind without stopping. I don’t feel that this one is as effect as brainstorming but I did learn how to use it. The final aspect of the process I learned about what kaizen.(http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/12/image-13.html) Kaizen is a means of managing the process or routines to make more efficient.  I am always looking for ways to make my papers more efficient and trying to improve my paper. For instance I did three drafts for my midterm. (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/10/draft-2-course-outcomes.html) (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/10/draft-for-course-outcome.html) (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/10/revised-what-i-learned.html)
I kept working on that paper until I thought it was a great paper. I kept looking for more ways for it too be efficient and looked for ways to improve it. I had a classmate look over my second copy and tell me what I needed to add to my paper to make it better. I took his advice and made a third copy. Another organization method I learned was the Cornell notes taking method. (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/12/image-9.html). In image 9 I used the Cornell note taking method to take my notes. Now that I have learned to use that I actually use it for a lot of my notes. A lot of my notes are taken like that but that’s just one example to prove I use it. It has made me a lot organized because I can just go to a page and all the main points are on the side and the description is in the middle. It’s easier to see where everything is. Then I write a conclusion on the bottom to sum up everything I learned on that Paige. It is very helpful and has made me and my notes a lot more organized.

The last thing I will talk about is the digital technologies aspect. I had never used a blog before this year.(http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/) That right there is my blog website. It is the first blog I have ever created and used. There I submit all my work: papers, prewriting, learning reflections, history papers, history notes, information about me, and other assignments I have had to do. I actually had never really taken place in a website where you can write things our express what you want to on them. I use the blog a lot because I have too, but also I enjoy reading others blogs to see what they write about. I sometimes look at my classmates blog to get ideas, to see how they write, and sometimes just because I want to see how well my classmates can write. Its fun to compare your paper with another classmates. Also I have had to use the blog for most of this paper. I have had to use the blogs to back up my information and show that I have learned a lot this year. I also had to bring my notes into Kinko’s, scan them, and then put them on a flash drive, then put them onto the blog and use them as hyperlinks in the paper. So this class is really teaching me how to master all different aspects of the internet. Another thing I learned about is citing sources. In my history paper I had to quoted facts from primary sources to back up my information. (http://ryanjacoby.blogspot.com/2010/11/crusaders-final-draft.html) In this paper I used the history primary source to back up my information on the crusades. I used different multiple primary sources to show how the crusades were unnecessary and just means for the pope to gain power.

This semester I have learned a lot of new things. More then I expected to learn coming into this year. I thought it was going to be going over grammar and writing papers to improve of writing skills. Boy was I wrong it was way more than that. I learned about a new powerful technique called rhetoric. I didn’t even know there was such a thing but now I know that is a good thing to be aware of. It makes you more aware of your surroundings and how you present yourself. Also I learned a lot more about the writing process. I was used to writing three paragraph essays my whole life without ever doing prewriting or any other process before. I would occasionally write a rough draft if it was due. Know I do prewriting’s, drafts, revisions, and then make my final copy. I have become a much stronger writer because of it. Also the P.E.A technique has come in handy and has become my new favorite technique. I use this in every paper I right now its awesome. Mastering technology has been helpful too. I haven’t quite mastered every technological thing but I now know how to use a blog, and cite sources. That is enough for me to be able to do a lot more with writing. I now know I can go online and create blogs to write about whatever I want not just for English class. There is so much I have learned this semester I am very excited for next semester with you and Dr. Demayo in the learning community again!

Yuan Dynasty

The Yuan dynasty was founded by the Mongol leader Kublai Khan, who ruled most of present-day China, all of modern Mongolia and its surrounding areas lasting officially from 1271 to 1368. It is considered both as a division or continuation of the Mongol Empire and as an imperial dynasty of China

Black Death

The black death occured in 1348 to 1350. It was one the worlds deadliest epidemics. It killed 30 to 60 percent of Euroupes population. Those who could afford it fled from the cities to the countryside. While some fled others flocked. Religious fanatics known as flagellants travelled from town to town whipping them selves as penance for whatever sin caused the disease. People turned on neighbors and minority groups killing them. With so many dead the price of labor increased and farmers and serfs could leave their land and shop for better deals. Lords attempted to reverse these trends by fixing prices and forcing their workers to stay at the manor.

Christian Monotheism

Monks and nuns lived the  monastic life. Monks began by living by themseleves in the woods, but then they started to live together in Monasteries. The nuns lived together in covenents.

The Caliphate

After Muhammaed's death there was dispute over who should lead the community. The majority felt that any prominent and qualified Muslim would serve. The minority believed a relative of Muhhamed should serve. The first three Caliph's were relatives of Muhammaed but werent related.

Vikings

The Vikings, from Scandinavia, began to raid and trade along Euroupe waterways. Vikings armies and individuals setteled many parts of Euroupe. They setteled parts of the British iles. The colonized Iceland in the North Seas. They extorted a Dukedom in what is now Normandy. They created city-state kingdoms in what is now Russia.

Charlemange

Charlemange was born in 768 and died in 814. He was the King of the Franks and deafeated the Lombards who were threating the pope. In return the pope crowned Charlemange as emperor of Rome. He tried to organize and standardize law and government in the areas under his rule. He also devolped a common liturgy, script, and system of inspections. The law of the differen't kingdoms became just one law throughout the country. Charlemange tried to revive the school system to produce clerics, and to support learning. Charlemange also relied heavily on the church to help him out. Charlemange was the protector of Christendom. He also fought the Saxons in Spain.

Crusaders Final Draft

In the late 11th century the first crusade took place. The Seljuk Turks converted to Islam, and took over the caliphate at Baghdad, the Egyptian Fatimid, and the Byzantine Empire. They were threating to take over Constantinople as well and this is what caused the first crusade. Alexius the Byzantine emperor, went to Pope Urban the II for help. Pope Urban the II was looking for a way to streghten the Roman's churches power. Urban's effort to streghten the Church was through a mission in Seljuk occupation of Jerusalem, and in 1095 the First Crusade began to get the land back from the new muslims occupying the Holy Land.

Pope Urban believed using soldiers to take back the Holy Land was a good oppurtunity to fix the Catholic faith around them and to streghthen the churche's power. He called a council of three hundred and ten bishops and abbots at Clermont. He wanted to fix Christianity before it was destroyed. Around him he saw no signs of faith being practiced, some of the things he saw were
" Peace altoghter discarded by the princes of the world, who were engaged in incessant warlike contention and quarreling among themselves. He saw many vanquished, wrongfully taken prisoner and very cruelly thrown into foulest dungeons, either ransomed for a high price of, tortured bu the triple torements of hunger, thirst, and cold, blotted out by death hidden from the world, He saw holy places violated; monasteries and villas burned. He saw that no one was spared of any human suffering, and that things divine and human alike were held in derision."(Pope Urban at Clermont, Fulcher pg 354).
Alexiad coming to him to help him with the Seljuk Turks in Jursalem was an oppurtunity to fix this and to get back the holy land from the Muslims. He uses God as a way to get people to fight for the holy land he tells them,
" by God's permission placed over the whole world with the papal crown, I, Urban, as the messanger of divine admonition, have been compelled by an unavoidable occasion to come here to you servants of God. I dersired those whom I judged to be steward's of God's ministries to be true stewards and faithful, with all hypocrisy rejected.""(Pope Urban at Clermont, Fulcher pg. 355)
He is saying that God is telling the pope to tell everyone else to fight in the crusade and do whats right. Your sins will be forgiving if you fight for what is right. That there not truly mercenaries but "sheppards holding crooks in your hands; and sleeping not, guard on every side the flock entrusted to you"(Pope Urban at Clermont, Fulcher pg. 355) Pope Urban the second is using God as a right to have these men fight in a war and uses God to make it a "just war". When they finally capture Jerusalem they say a prayer and in it they say
"we call upon you Catholic Church of Christ and of the whole Latin Church to exult in the so admirable bravery and devotion of your bretheren, in the so glorious and very desirable retribution of the omnipotent God, and in the so devoutedly hoped-for remission of all our sins through the grace of God and his bretheren."(The Capture of Jerusalem by the Crusaders, Raymond pg. 380)
So these soldiers were fighting for God and so that all their sins would be taken away and that they would automatically get a spot into heaven. This is what they were promised. According to their faith though it doesn't preach violence and God wouldn't want that done for him. What they did contradicts their teachings so there all probably screwed.

Not only were crusaders there to take back the holy land they also wanted to wipe out the Jews. As they passed through Jewish towns the Jews would whisper to each other what they had heard,
" Look now, we are going a long way to seek out the profane shrine and to avenge ouseleves on the Ishmaelites, when here, in our very midstm are the Jews- they whose forefathers murdered and crucified him for no reason. Let us first avenge ouselves on them and exterminate them from among the nations so that the name of Isreal will no longer be rembered." (Chronicle of Solomon Bar Simson, pg360)
The Christians on the crusade want to avenge Jesus now because it was the Jews who had him crucified. Since they are fighting for God, why not avenge Jesus by killing all the Jews? This lead to many deaths of Jews. For instance, " On the twenty-third of Iyar they attacked the community of Worms. The Community was then divided into two groups; some remained in their home and others fled to the local bishop seeking refuge."(Chronicles of Solomon bar Simson, pg. 361). Those who stayed in the homes were pillaged and they took the Torah scroll and burned it. The Jews who did not go and convert where terrorized by the Christians. Simon felt the Christians were the ones who were wrong and that the Pope was Satan. He says, " And Satan- the pope of evil Rome"(Chronicle of Solomon bar Simson, pg. 365) It was the Christians who were really causing most of the problems by trying to wipe everyone out who wasn't a Christian. The one who started it all, the Pope, Simon refers to as Satan because he is causing all these problems.
The Crusades were there to retrieve the holy land by using force. It was ok because Pope Urban said thats what God wanted to be done. The Crusades then turned into murdering Jews to get revenge on the Jews for crucifying Jesus. Everything was messed up at this time and the Pope used the Catholic faith for his own selfish reasons and caused many causlaties at this time.

Monday, November 22, 2010

In the 12th century the Franks and Roman Catholic crusades were going on to get back Jerusalem and the holy land from the muslims. The Franks and Roman Catholics believed using violence and force was the way to get back what was theirs. The crudsades were happening in both the Middle East and Western Euroupe.
Middle East-
The holy land, which is located in jerusalem, is in the middle east. It has both religious value to the Chrisitans and the Muslims. It is important to the Christians because it is where Jesus was born, lived, and was crucified, and resurected. It is important to muslims because it is said that Muhammed ascended into heaven. Muhammed is the prophet of God in the muslim relgion so it is one of the most religious/sacred sites in the Muslims relgion as well.
Western Euroupe-
The Christians were trying to get back the holy land and were saying it was "Just War" to attack the Muslims to get back the holy land. People believed that if you died in battle trying to get Jerusalem back you would be forgiven of your sins and would go straight to heaven. In 1603 Pope Alexander said that they go invade the Muslims to try to gain the holy land back.
Conclusion-
The main reason the crusades were going on was a fight for the holy land. It was sacred to both religions and they both wanted control of Jerusalem. Christians actually thought that killing Muslims to try to retatin the holy land was good and that they would be forgiven for their sins. The Pope even approved of the crusades. They believed it was just because it was such a sacred place in their relgious views.

Rough Draft of Final Portfolio

I believe I have earned an A this year in class based on what I have learned and the work and effort I have put forth. I have learned a lot of new things over the course of this semester and I have work and notes to prove that I have learned alot and that I am deserving of an A. I have done most of the assignments done for this class and I am doing my final portfolio right now. The main points I will focus on are the general course goals, rhetorical knowledge, process, critical thinking, reading, and writing, oral communaction skills, and technology.

General Course Goals-
I can use all the papers, blog posts, history/english papers, notes to show how I have adapted to the writing process, and how I have learned to write in differen't genres to put a main focus on my audience. The differen't formats I have learned to write. For instance the formal and informal writing styles. My first blog would be a good example of informal writing of twenty-five simple sentences. How I use rhethoric in my papers. The way I use logic, emotions, and credibilty. Also how you can use genres and notes to have your audience believe what you are saying. I can show the reasearch paper I did in history to show that I know how to quote primary sources from a book. Also I can show, through my blogs, I can cite internet websites as well, and know how to document sources. I can show academic intergrity through my blog post showing that the writing was mine and that if I did use someone else's idea I cited it to show it was someone else's work. Also my last paper I wrote got a B becaus I took adivce from my partner, who proofread it, and showed me the mistakes I made and gave me some idea's to change it. I have the before and after of the paper and I can show you how much better one is than the other. We have used the primary book source and the internet to look up facts about our topics for our history papers and I can prove in both history papers that I have learned how to succesfully take information from the book, or internet and use it in my paper to back up statements.
Rhetorical Knowledge-
When I first came into English 111 I didn't even know what rhetoric was or that it even was a word. I have learned alot about it though in this semester. Now I know a lot about what rhetoric is and what rhetoricians do. Rhetoric is the study of how to accomplish your ends by using communication. Rhetoricians use the pathos, ethos, and logos triangle to accomplish their ends. For instance ethos is the development of your character or reputations, logos is your ideals and logic, and pathos is your emotions. Rhetoricians have agendas, goals, and purposes and use that to bring a message to their audience. They have to know that their audience expects from them so they can know how to craft their message. A lot of times the author will use a genre for a certain audience. When using a genre you must be honest, give your own opinion, try to anticipate “the other”, and give good solid information. Your opinion is the basic structure of your argument.
Process-
I have learned the wiring process pretty well this year. I have had to turn in a lot of pre-writing, rough drafts, revised drafts, and final copies of papers on my blog. I have learned that writing papers becomes easier if you do the pre-writing, and rough drafts instead of just winging the paper the night before its due. I have written a log of blog entries online in informal writing, but my papers that I turn in for class are in formal writing because they are for a differen't audience. My blog entry is forever wants to read it, while my papers I turn in are for my professor.
Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing-
This year I have also learned a lot about the writing process. That has been one of our main focuses this year. I used some of these skills to start the last paper and now this paper. I also learned the different steps of the writing process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, proof reading, publishing, and review. I never really thought about using these steps before this year. I would always wing my papers and just turn them in without any revision or pre-writing before hand. This year I have used different forms of prewriting like the group brainstorming sessions. I also used the free writing once in class. I have written a draft for both of the papers that I have written. I exchanged my papers with a classmates last weekend in Dr. Demayo’s class to proof read and we exchanged opinions on how to improve each others papers. Then I made the changes and published it and turned it in to class the other day. I have learned how to write formally and informally. For instance the first blog entry I did was twenty-five simple sentences. Also the learning reflections I do are informal as well. I wrote my last paper formally because it was a paper due for class and that how a professor expects the paper to be turned in.
Oral Communication Skills-We have had a lot of group work to show oral communication skills. I was also the leader of my group for the history notecard thing and I notified everyone the notecards were due saturday to make sure no one forgot. I even had to post two of my group members notecards to my wall so that we could have all of our notecards online. Also I have revised and classmates paper, and vice versa. I took the information he wrote down and used it to improve on my paper. I have done the class assignments with the groups when we read out of the primary source books and talk about what we are going to write about.
Technology-
The technology we used this year was the blog. We learned how to use an internet site to write down our papers, notes, and learnig reflecitons. We aslo used technology to research for papers and quoted them. And finally we used slideshows in history to learn.

Magna Carta (Unfinished)

The magna carta is an english charter, that was issued in 1215, then reissued in the later 13th century.
The 1215 Charter required King John of England to proclaim certain liberties, and accept that his will was not arbitrary, for example by explicitly accepting that no "freeman" could be punished except through the law of the land, a right which is still in existence today.

Christianity, Islam, and Judaism

Chirsitanity, Islam, and Judaism all are monotheistic religions that come from the same root but have slight differences. The differences would be Judaism staying with just the old testament and believing in the new testament, Christians believing God had a son who was a form of God but walked on the earth, and Islams belief that God gave Muhammed a revelation.

Crusades

In the 12th century the Franks and Roman Catholic crusades were going on to get back Jerusalem and the holy land from the muslims. The Franks and Roman Catholics believed using violence and force was the way to get back what was theirs.

Barbarians

The Chinese society and European societies were withered down by the attacks of Mongols and Vikings. The mongols invaded the Chinese, while the Vikings would raid the costs of European countries.

Revised What I Learned

What I Have Learned So Far
This year in English 111 I believe I have put in enough effort and completed my assignments to achieve an A for the semester. Some of the things I have done is I have been to every class, I do the weekly assignments, I finished the paper due for you and Dr. DeMayo, and I have learned a lot through the course of this class. Some of the main points I will hit will be the general course goals: rhetorical knowledge, process, critical thinking, reading and writing, oral communication skills, and digital technologies.
Before I started the class I had no idea what a rhetorician even was. Now I know a lot about what rhetoric is and what rhetoricians do. Also I am writing this paper formally as well.
My next area to prove I have learned a lot of new things is the critical thinking, reading, and writing area. For my first paper I wrote I learned a lot about two different civilizations and what it meant to live the good life. So I used to research and my writing to learn a few things new in history while writing a paper for English. I have also learned how to use quotations. If take another’s idea from a website, book, blog, or anything that’s not my writing I must use quotations to give credit and to show it wasn’t my idea. In the paper I just wrote I used a primary source to look up facts about my topic and would quote the facts to support my reasoning. This class year I have also learned how to produce journal entries, blogs, letters, and memos. Most of my journal entries I enter into my blog. For instance we do a weekly learning reflection that is like a journal entry for me. This year we have also used or primary source book to read from and then in class we will usually discuss it. We will usually read it before class then we will come to class and look at the questions at the board and give our thoughts on what we interpreted from the text.
I have also improved on my oral communication skills this year as well. I have improved because of our groups. I am usually a shy person but I feel like the groups is a good way to express your ideas to people without having to say it by yourself in front of the whole class. The groups have loosened me up a little and its easier for me to participate with others. For instance when we do the group brainstorming I can give fellow classmates some of my opinions while getting to write down some of theirs as well. it’s a real win-win situation for everyone. Also when we do the exercises out of the primary book and we discuss our interpretations in the group then tell the teacher what we think our section meant. I have also learned that if you look at the teacher and look interested then that makes it look like that your listening and paying attention more then someone who has their head down, or is scribbling on their notebook paper.
The last thing I will talk about is the digital technologies aspect. I had never used a blog before this year. This year I have also learned how quote sites on the internet to enter into my paper. For example I used a quote from an internet site on my last paper. Also I used the internet to look up all the areas on the map for my map quiz in history.
I believe I deserve an A because I have learned quite a lot this year, and I have been doing my work. You can see that I have been doing my work by looking at my blog. Also you can see that I have learned a lot by reading this paper and by the time I turn my portfolio in. I have learned a lot up to this point right now, and I am excited to see how much more I will learn by the end of the class!

Draft #2 Course outcomes

Ryan Jacoby
Dr. Brandon
English 111
10/20/10
This year I have also learned a lot about the writing process. That has been one of our main focuses this year. I used some of these skills to start the last paper and now this paper. Also I have learned the different steps of the writing process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, proof reading, publishing, and review. Draft for Course Outcome

When I first came into the class I didn’t even know what a rhetorician was. Now I have learned that it is someone who can influence others by using pathos, logos and ethos. Being a rhetorician makes you know your surroundings and makes your aware of how you present yourself. There are a lot of ways rhetoricians’ can influence audiences by using tone, knowing the audience, and the pathos logos ethos triangle.
Next for process, I can show my paper that I did for Dr. Brandon and Dr. Demayo. I had been a procrastinator and never actually did pre-writing or brainstorming. I can use the brainstorms and pre-writings from the blog to show I understand. I can use the notes I have taken on the writing process as well to explain. I did that early paragraph on the clear style. It was my first entry in the blog. I can use that to show informal. I can use the paper for Dr. Brandon and Dr. Demayo as a more formal paper. Also I have notes written down about the difference between the too that I can include in this as well.
For the Critical thinking, reading, and writing section I can show how I learned to use others blog to find my own may to start my entries. Sometimes I look at my fellow classmate’s blogs’ to get an idea how to start mine. I don’t use anyone else’s ideas I just get an idea of what to do. I also can show that I have learned how to use quotes by weekly in class assignments and the quotes I used in my paper. I can show all the blog entries I have written to show that I have learned how to produce letters, journals, blogs, lists, and threaded discussions. For the read, summarize, and respond to non-fiction text I can use some of the work we did out of the primary source history book that we do assignments in.
Next my oral communications skills have gotten better through the group assignments we do in class, the peer review we did on each others paper, and oral presentations given about or weekly in class assignments. How I have learned to maintain better body posture and sit towards the front of the class to show that I am interested in what’s going on. Also I have demonstrated active listening skills by taking down notes and writing down others ideas when we do the brainstorming activities.
Next for digital technologies I can talk about the blog we have been using the whole year. How I have written my papers on my computer and use the computer to revise my paper and share it on the blog site which you can connect to from the forum. Also how I have learned to organize my blog and been able to use websites to find information without copying and pasting from the site. How sometimes I use the shared blogs to get myself started so I get an idea of what to write about.

Welcome to the Good Life! (Final Copy)

Ryan Jacoby
Fall 2010 History 111 08CP Histoy of World Civilization I
10/4/2010

In early civilization there were different views on what it meant to live the good life. What were their ideas of the good life? It could be a certain type of occupation, pleasing the gods, being successful, or your actions in your everyday life. Every day life in these documents were influenced by achieving the “good life”. Each of these documents had their own views of the good life. In “The Upanishads: Karma and Reincarnation” the good life was your actions and desires. In “Be A Scribe” the good life was becoming a scribe. Two documents that refer to the good life would be “Be a Scribe” and “The Upanishads: Karma and Reincarnation”. “Be a Scribe” and “The Upanishads: Karma and Reincarnation” didn’t share too much in common but both showed you how to live the good life.

In “Be A Scribe” it is a scribe that talks about why living the scribe life is better then every other occupation. It is a strong opinionated document that heavily suggests that the scribes lifestyle is the best. In this document the scribe talks about all the other jobs and how much hard work you have to put into it. Who would want to put in so much manual labor work? That’s why he saying be a scribe. For instance the scribe says “ The washerman’s day going up, going down. All his limbs are weak, from whitening his neighbors’ clothes every day, from washing their linen”. (All Occupations Are Bad Except That of the Scribe, 62) The scribe also states how much easier his job is then everyone else’s he says, “ The scribe, he alone, records the output of all of them. Take note of it!”.(All Occupations Are Bad Except That of the Scribe, 63) Their the scribe is saying why do those other jobs when you could just watch them do it and then write it down. There’s not as much manual work involved so it’s the easier way. Also if you are a scribe you will have more freedom and won’t be working all day. The scribe says, “ You stride freely on the road, you will not be like an hired ox. You are in front of others”. (Be a Scribe, 64) Also the scribe compares his job to that of a soldiers. The scribe refers to the soldiers life as dangerous, tormenting, and a lot of work. He thinks if you are a soldier you will either die in battle or if you do survive you will not be strong enough to continue on. The scribes last words of advice are “Be a scribe, and be spared from soldering! You call and one says: “Here I am.” You are safe from torments. Every man seeks to raise himself up. Take note of it!”(The Scribe Does Not Suffer Like the Soldier, 65) The scribe is basically saying his job is the best because it is the least amount of work. Why not become a scribe because it’s the least work load and least amount of manual labor.

Another document for living the good life would be “The Upanishads: Karma and Reincarnation”. In this document it talks about what happens to you if you live a good or bad life. It doesn’t necessarily say that this is the good life, its just my interpretation of what I believed lead to the best life in their society. Depending on how you live your life your soul will be reincarnated into a higher or lower life. Therefore, depending on how you lived decided how life after would be. In The Upanishads it says, “ The doer of good becomes good. The doer of evil becomes evil. One becomes a virtuous man by virtuous action, bad by bad action. (The Upanishads: Karma and Reincarnation, 94) Also they believe you desires play a big part on how you live. If you have good desires you will do good actions, “ As is his desire, such is his resolve, as his resolve, such the action he performs; what action he performs, that he procures for himself”. (The Upanishads: Karma and Reincarnation, 94) To live the good life in this religion you don’t want any desire. That’s how you reach the top, Brahman. It says’ “ Now the man who does not desire. - He is who without desire, who is freed from desire, whose desire is satisfied, whose desire is the Soul- his breathes do not depart. Being very Brahman, he goes to the Brahman”. (The Upanishads: Karma and Reincarnation, 94) Living the good life in this religion is getting rid of desires or attempting not to desire anything. If you can get rid of those temptations you will be living their idea of the good life. You will be reincarnated into something high up when you die.

Next, in both of the documents they shared their idea of what a good life was. They both focused on the actions you wanted to perform to live the good life. In “Be A Scribe” the actions you wanted to perform were choosing the life of the scribe. You wanted to choose that lifestyle because it included less physical work and you just had to write down what others were doing. In “The Upanishads: Karma and Reincarnation” the actions you wanted to perform were the desires and actions. You moral virtues decided how good of a life you had. Both of these documents focus your actions on the present and how they would affect how good your life is. Another similar idea that both the documents shared was the idea of being higher up in society. For instance the manual labor jobs in “Be A Scribe” weren’t for high class society citizens. Scribes were considered middle, but definitely higher up than the jobs described in the document. In “The Upanishads: Karma and Reincarnation” you wanted to live morally and wanted to rid yourself of most desires. You wanted to perform good actions to have a good life. Doing those things would let your soul be reincarnated into a higher state then what you normally were. So living the good and right life would bring your status up after you passed away.

Both of the documents focused on what their idea of the good life was but they didn’t share too many of the same ideas. One of the same influences though was your present actions in life. The other influence would be your status in society, both documents you want to be higher up then in lower class. In “Be A Scribe” living the good life was not doing a lot of manual labor, keeping yourself safe from the extremities of war, and performing the easiest job. Being a scribe was like taking the easy route in the work area but you still learned to read and write, and you worked for high up people. In “The Upanishads: Karma and Reincarnation” it was all about getting rid of your desires. If you could get rid of them or try to limit them down you would be getting closer to Brahman. Brahman is want you wanted to achieve and would definitely be the best life. Everyone was trying to get there. Also, your actions affected you as well, the better the person you were the better your life would be. Therefore you wanted to be on your best behavior so you could reincarnate to a higher up state. You wanted to live a good life, and by doing that you had to act good.

What I learned

This week in English I learned that the thing we went over on procrastination is definately me. Im actually doing this right now at the last minute. I kept saying I was going to do it Sunday, then I said I will do it Sunday morning, now im doing it Sunday night. I have always been a procrastenater and hopefully I can shake that habit this year. I don't know why I always say in my mind I want to get it done earlier, but I can never bring myself to do it. I don't know what it is!

In History we talked about differen't religions. It's difficult thinking about all those other views when I have been going to a catholic school for over ten years. It's intresting though, seeing what the believe, but everytime something contricts the bible I think its a dumb view or think how stupid are they too believe that. I know that people think the same about my views so I try to see every side of it.

Monotheism VS. Polytheism

Many religions in ancient times were polytheistic. For instance ancient Egyptians and the Mesopotamians had polytheistic religions. Unlike both of these two religions, Judaism was monotheistic. They believed in one God instead of worshiping multiple Gods. Judaism seems the most reasonable to me because now most of the dominate religions are monotheistic.

Judaism and Egyptian religion are linked because many of the Israelites were actually slaves in Egypt when Moses came and saved them by crossing the Red Sea. Many of the Israelites were even tempted to go against God and worship other gods. For example some of them worshipped the Golden Calf. But unlike the Egyptian religion in Judaism they believe in one God. He was who created the world, and chooses whether or not you go to heaven or hell. Everything is centered around him and he created the rules of the religion, which would be the ten commandments. The ten commandments can be found in Exodus 20, and those are the rules that you have to follow. Like the Egyptian religion you also have to follow rules as well. He was all knowing and always knew what was going to happen. Unlike Judaism Egyptian religion believes in myths and multiple Gods. Myths are what explain unexplainable things like how the world came to be. Also the believed in multiple gods, and each had a different reason for being a god. For instance gods were the reason for natural occurrences or problems that people were having.

Mesopotamians religion is very similar to the Egyptians. They were polytheistic as well. They worshiped gods and goddesses. There gods and goddesses seemed more devastating in their religion because of the flood in Mesopotamia. There were many flood problems because of the unpredictability of the Tigris and Euphrates. When this happened the Mesopotamians believed that they did something wrong to upset the gods and that they were being punished.

Judaism seems the most reasonable because their one God is everything too them. It isn't a bunch of different gods controlling everything and stories to explain the unexplainable. Many of those myths aren't believable at all. Right now most of the big religions are monotheistic because it is easier to understand. It is easier to have faith. God was the reason for the earth being created, he was the one who made the rules, and he is all knowing. It is easier to put your faith into one god then into multiple gods.

Come to Mesopotamia!

Come to Mesopotamia if your looking for a great area to live, if your looking for new opportunities, and learn to about new cultures. Mesopotamia has two rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, which provide a lot of job opportunities for you. You can be a farmer and grow crops because of the annual floods or build the irrigation systems to control the flooding of the rivers. Also Mesopotamia is an open area, where there is a great opportunity to trade with other nations. You can also learn to read and write cuneiform and become a scribe. There is so much available here to offer to you!

Mesopotamia has two rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, that contribute to flood water for crops, thus there is less likely a chance of a dry season. Here we have built irrigation systems to control the flooding, so farmers can produce crops. Also an alluvial plain has formed, which helps out even more with controlling the floods. The alluvial plain gives Mesopotamia a great chance for a high production in food. Also the soil here is fine and rich, because of the silt carried by the river floods constantly replenished the fields. Therefore, tillage is light work.

Here in Mesopotamia we have open boundaries making it easier to trade with other countries. Unlike Egypt we have contact with our neighboring countries and don't cramp ourselves between natural boundaries. We can trade with Lebanon, to obtain cedars; Oman, to obtain copper and stones; Afghanistan, for lapis lazuli. It is perfect for living in cities, and for them to continue growing. It has a rich agricultural land and with easy access to neighboring countries. Mesopotamia has so much potential to continue to grow. It is the crossroad of Southwest Asia, and the meeting ground for several distinct cultural and linguistic groups of people. Also there is great opportunities to get cultural ideas from other countries to maybe adapt into your lifestyle. There is so much you can do with it.

Mesopotamia also has a writing style here called cuneiform. Cuneiform is syllables that are carved into clay to make out words. It is a way to send messages over long distances. It is another way to communicate with others. This enhances our trade opportunities, control property, and to transmit ideas of society through literature, historical records and sacred texts. So if you want to be a scribe Mesopotamia offers that job as well.

Mesopotamia has so much to offer. We have the Tigris and Euphrates, which provide food production through flooding.  It is an open area providing opportunity for trade and a way to interact with other cultures. Unlike Egypt, we are more accessible and easier to communicate and trade with. If you want the opportunity to meet others come here. We are the crossroad of Southwest Asia. We even have our own unique writing style called cuneiform. You can learn to read and write by becoming a scribe. Why would you not want to be here? There are so many different opportunities here for you!
