Outline for Mid-Term

Thesis- This year in English 112 I believe I have learned and worked hard enough for an A for the first half of the semester. I have learned a lot more this first semester and have improved my unpolished skills from English 111. I have learned how to use rhetoric more in depth in my essays, how to use the writing process to my advantage, difference between primary and secondary sources, how to write good thesis statements.

First Paragraph-
Use my essay i wrote in English and History to show how I used rhetoric to my advantage by knowing who the author was to write my message and publish it. Explain the rhetorical triangle. Use my notes to explain it and use paragraphs to go more in depth and use examples.

Second Paragraph-
The writing process is a big improvement I have made. It has made me realize that I can use pre-writing to help me write my papers. I also have the process in my notes and can use that to show that I have the process down.

Third Paragraph-
I have learned a lot about primary and secondary sources. In my last paper I used both to give evidence to support my idea. I have note cards to show where I got the quotes from. I can use both that paragraph, the black book, primary source book and notes to give evidence to this paragraph.

Fourth Paragraph-
Thesis analysis- I have improved my thesis writing. We have done a lot of work on the thesises this year. We have done some out of class assignments as well as in class assignments. I also wrote a thesis on my first paragraph and it was pretty strong.

Fifth Paragrph-
Conclusion that sums up everything I have learned.

Viewpoints on Religion through Government

In both of my primary sources conflicts with religion and government appear. Martin Luther and Emperor Kangxi both criticize other religions through government. Martin Luther wants to separate the Christian belief from the law of the earth, while Emperor Kangxi just flat out believes the Catholic faith is faulty.

In Martin Luther's “Protestant Reformation” he criticizes the Christians for wanting to combine their faith with law. Martin Luther does not hold the popular belief of allowing Church and State. He believes that Christian beliefs are a problem to people in society. Martin says "We must reject those who so highly boast of Moses Laws, as to temporal affairs, for we have our written imperial and country laws, under which we live, and unto which we are sworn."(Of the Law and the Gospel, pg. 661). Martin Luther is trying to say those that put God before the law is wrong and that they should be rejected. The law is the law and that is why they have separation of church and state because of different religions. Martin is trying to explain that Christians need to learn how to separate these two matters. He says, "All Christians should learn rightly to discern the law and grace in their hearts, and know how to keep one from the other in deed and in truth, not merely in words, as the pope and other luceties do, which mingle them together, and, as it were, make a cake not fit to eat."(Of the Law and the Gospel, pg. 662) Again Martin Luther is saying that the Christians should not intertwine religion and government. The two just don't mix. Everyone has to follow the law, but not everyone has the same religious beliefs as the Christians. He wants the Christians to be able to follow the law of the country, but they can also worship their God. Martin Luther doesn’t have a problem with the actual religion itself he just doesn’t like how the Christians believe the laws should revolve around the Christian beliefs. Everyone is not the same religion so why would you base the law of the land off of one faith it just doesn’t make any sense and I see where Martin Luther is coming from. I know he is not a Catholic and probably thinks that some of their viewpoints are not good for making decisions on how laws should be enforced. He says, “We must make a clear distinction; we must place the gospel in heaven, and leave the law on earth” (Of the Law and Gospel, pg. 662). This is the quote that best summarizes everything he is saying. Just leave Christian views with God and God only, but your views of the law shouldn’t be biased toward religion and that should be the law here on earth.

In the next primary source Emperor Kangxi talks about religion as well. Emperor Kangxi holds the popular belief about religion because he is the emperor of China and everyone follows him. Westerners have come to China to spread the Catholic faith. He starts to mistrust the missionaries because some of them are there just to make money. Emperor Kangxi says, "Besides these meddlers there are also those out for profit, greedy traders, who would not be allowed to live here."(Emperor Kangxi on Religion, pg. 640). He is getting up set with the immigrants coming from Europe either trying to make money or spread the Catholic Faith. He has to stricken the law so he can keep an eye on all the immigrants. The Catholics with the certificates have strict rules though to what they can do. They are allowed to preach but the Chinese have the choice of listening. If the Chinese officials believe they are stirring up trouble they can take away the certificates. “The Chinese stricken the rules on Christians and Christians were required to have a certificate to preach"(Emperor Kangxi on Religion, pg. 640). Emperor Kangxi is trying to get a hold of all the immigrants. He does that by putting them all in one area and making sure the missionaries have certificates so they know that they are real. Emperor Kangxi has a little bit of tolerance for the religion but just can't understand it. “I had asked Verbiest why God had not forgiven his son without making him die, but though he had tried to answer I had not understood him” (Emperor Kangxi on Religion, pg. 641). The Emperor tries to understand the Catholic religion but the missionaries cannot explain the miracles or Jesus’s death to him, so he has no reason to believe it. He doesn't get too upset with the missionaries who are trying to spread the catholic faith, but is more upset at the greedy men who pretend to be missionaries to make money. Emperor Kangxi does not hate people who are Catholic faith he just believes that some of their religion doesn’t make sense. One reason why he lets the missionaries preach the Catholic faith is because some of their words were just like the teachings of Buddhist and Taoists, “Yet some of their words were no different from the world or improper teachings of Buddhist or Taoists, and why should they be treated differently.”(Emperor Kangxi on Religion, pg. 641) Emperor Kangxi is softening up to the Catholic faith a little bit because he sees some similarities between his religion and the Catholic religion. He still believes the Catholic faith is wrong he just doesn’t detest them.

Emperor Kangxi and Martin Luther both criticize religion in their primary sources. Martin Luther didn't want religion and government to mix. While Emperor Kangxi, head of the government, gives his view on another religion. Emperor Kangxi does not agree with the other religion but has a little more tolerance for it than Martin Luther does. Martin Luther just thinks mixing religion with government is plain dumb and that Christians need a find to separate their religion from their political views. Martin Luther and Emperor Kangxi both talk about a similar religion that came from the same roots. The Catholic and Christian faith are almost identical, with very few differences. They both don't agree with the religious teachings of those faith and talk about how they are wrong. The main difference is the tolerance Emperor Kangxi has on the Catholic faith compared to Martin Luther’s hatred of those who can’t separate their religious views from their political views. Also Emperor Kangxi focuses more on how the Catholic faith beliefs are wrong, while Martin Luther beliefs using the Christian faith as a guideline for the laws are wrong.

Martin Luther and Kangxi are similar in giving their view point on religion through government. They have many differences on how they go about it. Martin Luther has no patience with the beliefs of Christians that think that their faith should be the guideline for the law. Emperor Kangxi actually gives the Catholic faith a chance. Martin Luther is not in the majority for his belief and is trying to get everyone else to follow him. Emperor Kangxi is the emperor and everyone has to follow what he says so his belief is the majority. Another difference is how Kangxi beliefs that the Catholic faith is faulty and that people can’t explain to him the reasoning behind their faith. Martin Luther is not so much worried about beliefs just using the Christian beliefs with the law.
